Four-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have begun their IPL 2022 campaign on a horrifying note as they have lost their first four games of the season. This is the first time in IPL history that CSK has lost its first four games. With four losses, the team is placed at the bottom of the points table with an NRR of -1.211.

Ahead of the season, MS Dhoni handed over the reins to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to groom him for a future leadership role. However, Jadeja has looked mediocre as a captain, and often his decision-making skills on the field have not been effective so far.

During the 2022 mega auction, the defending champions have managed to acquire almost every player from the previous season but have missed a few who played an important role in winning CSK’s fourth title. In this article, we will talk about five players from last season whom CSK is missing in IPL 2022.

5 players from the previous season CSK are missing in IPL 2022

1. Faf du Plessis

The 37-year-old Du Plessis had an outstanding IPL season in 2021, where he emerged as the second-highest run-scorer with 633 runs in 16 innings. Faf du Plessis stitched up some solid partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad in almost every game at the top of the order. His consistency in the top order played a crucial role in CSK’s winning the coveted title for the 4th time in IPL history.

The calm and composed batsman has been a consistent performer for them over the years. He played his last innings in the yellow jersey at the finals of the 2021 edition, where he won the “Player of the Match” for his knock of 86 off 59 balls. However, CSK failed to reacquire Du Plessis’ service for IPL 2022, which has haunted them so far in the ongoing season. Compared to last season, in the first four games of the season, CSK has struggled to find a good opening partnership. The former South African captain was roped in by Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he has been appointed as captain.

2. Shardul Thakur

The all-rounder from Mumbai joined CSK in 2018 and since then has been an integral part of the side. He rose to prominence in the last couple of seasons and was the go-to bowler for MS Dhoni in IPL 2021. Whenever CSK needed a breakthrough, Thakur was pressed into action. He has a knack for taking wickets and picks important wickets at crucial times. The medium-pacer finished the 2021 edition with 21 wickets in 16 games at an economy of 8.80.

But his true value is more than just numbers. The 30-year-old can swing the ball but more importantly, he has a supernatural ability to hit the ball at the right length consistently. In the second half of IPL 2021, Thakur delivered double blows in one over in three matches. Along with bowling, he can contribute with the bat in the lower order. In the last few matches, the Mumbai cricketer has played some useful knocks for his current team Delhi Capitals.

3. Sam Curran

The English all-rounder was a part of the franchise in the last two seasons and was a key member of the title-winning squad in 2021. Sam Curran scalped 22 wickets in 23 matches and scored 242 runs at a strike rate close to 160 in the Chennai colors. The 23-year-old Curran provided the much-needed impetus with the bat and was handy with the new ball.

Curran’s all-round performance added more depth to the CSK’s side. The left-arm seamer made an instant impact after joining the team as he emerged as one of the biggest positives for CSK in IPL 2020. This season, the Super Kings couldn’t retain his services after he pulled out of this year’s campaign. As things look, the Chennai franchise has not managed to find an apt replacement for Curran in the 15th edition of IPL.

4. Josh Hazlewood

Australian speedster Josh Hazlewood is known for his pace, bounce, and accuracy. Last year during his stint with CSK, MS Dhoni used him smartly in both powerplays as well as in death overs. Hazlewood picked wickets at regular intervals in the 2021 edition and emerged as a consistent performer for the franchise. It was surprising that CSK management didn’t go for him in the 2022 mega auction.

The 31-year-old joined the Chennai-based franchise in 2020 however didn’t get much opportunity to showcase his talent. His breakthrough performance came last year when the New South Wales native picked up 11 wickets in nine games at an economy of 7.93 runs per over. The Aussie speedster will turn up for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2022.

5. Lungi Ngidi

The South African speedster, who can hit 140 kmph consistently, was not a regular member of CSK’s playing XI but whenever he got an opportunity, Lungi Ngidi delivered. Since his debut with CSK, the pacer has bowled some fiery spells and in no time, became the go-to bowler for Dhoni in the 2018 edition.

Last season, he featured in just 3 games and managed to pick up just five wickets, including 3/28 against KKR. In his maiden IPL season, Ngidi picked up 11 wickets in just 7 games, that too, with a brilliant economy rate of 6. In the same season, CSK lifted their third IPL trophy in 2018 after a two-year ban. Albeit for a small time, Ngidi has made his presence felt for the Super Kings.
