Arun Goyal takes over as Election Commissioner, appointed amid Gujarat elections

New Election Commissione Arun Goel: Retired IAS officer Arun Goel has taken over as the Election Commissioner. Goyal has been a 1985 batch Punjab cadre officer. He will be part of the Election Commission along with Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar and Election Commissioner Anoop Chandra Pandey. The Union Ministry of Law and Justice informed about Goyal’s appointment. Sushil Chandra retired from the post of Chief Election Commissioner in May. Rajeev Kumar has become the Chief Election Commissioner in his place.

Arun Goyal had resigned 40 days before his retirement. He was on deputation to the Center for many years and was currently holding important responsibilities in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). He was to retire on December 31, 2022, but his resignation was accepted by the Punjab and Central governments on the same day. 

 Appointment made amid Gujarat elections

Arun Goyal to be held next month Gujarat Assembly Elections. This is an important appointment before the Gujarat elections. Elections are being held in two phases for the 182-member assembly of Gujarat. Voting will be held on December 1 and 5. The result will come on December 8.

Has also served in the irrigation department

Arun will be part of the Election Commission along with Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar and Election Commissioner Anoop Chandra Pandey. Goyal is basically a resident of Patiala. After becoming IAS, he has held many important positions in Punjab and at the Center. He has also served as Principal Secretary in the Department of Irrigation, Energy and Housing for a long time.
