People started making different types of speculations, some people saw it as a big terrorist attack and some were claiming something big in Kashmir. No one had the slightest idea that the script of this entire stir would be read in the Parliament House of Delhi.
When Home Minister Amit Shah made the announcement
As soon as Amit Shah came to Parliament on 5 August 2019, his attitude was different. As soon as the mention of Kashmir started, he stood up and announced that the government has decided to remove Article 370 from Kashmir. With this announcement, all the opposition MPs present in Parliament and people across the country were shocked. No one had any idea that the government was going to take a big decision like removing Article 370.
BJP’s agenda was ‘Article 370’
BJP sitting mostly in opposition Narendra Modi, he registered a big victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. After this, all the big and controversial decisions were taken by the Modi government. There was a buzz about Article 370, but everyone was thinking that BJP cannot take such a big decision as soon as the government is formed. This is what happened and in five years the BJP did not mention much about it. But every time this issue was being given a prominent place in the BJP manifesto. Since this issue was not new to the BJP, it was included in the main agenda of the party since the Jan Sangh era.
Preparations started after the victory in 2019
After the victory in the elections, the Modi government was sworn in grandly. In June 2019, the stir regarding Kashmir started when the Modi government, who was joint secretary in the PMO and sent BVR Subramaniam, who ran a special operation against Naxalites, as the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir. Although everyone considered it a routine change, in July, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval also visited Kashmir, where he took stock of security for three days. Doval’s visit was considered very important.
The situation in Kashmir after the end of 370
After the end of Article 370, a complete lockdown was imposed in Kashmir. Every street and intersection was guarded by security forces. Also, all the big and small leaders were either under house arrest or were put in jail. This went on for about a year. The opposition kept accusing that human rights are being violated in Kashmir, people’s life has become like a prison. It was also criticized by foreign organizations. After about a year and a half, the security was gradually reduced in Kashmir and people started getting facilities like internet. With this the release of the leaders of Kashmir also started.
