Demand for judicial inquiry in Morbi bridge accident, Supreme Court will hear on Monday

Morbi Bridge Collapse: The Supreme Court will hear on Monday (November 21) a petition seeking formation of a judicial commission to investigate the Morbi bridge collapse incident in Gujarat. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli will hear the PIL filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari. The petition states that the incident shows the negligence and gross failure of the officers.

Advocate Vishal Tiwari had urged for immediate listing of the matter on November 1. On this, the apex court had said that it will hear the matter soon. A total of 134 people, including women and children, were killed when a British-era cable bridge over the Machhu river collapsed on October 30 in Gujarat’s Morbi town. 

What was said in the petition?

Advocate Vishal Tiwari in his petition said that since last one decade many incidents have happened in our country in which cases of huge loss of life have come to light due to mismanagement, lapse of duty and negligence of maintenance, which could have been avoided. 

Nine people were arrested

Many flaws came to the fore

During the investigation of this accident, the police had said that the company which had the work of repairing the bridge was given time till December to complete the work. Although the company had opened the bridge ahead of time. Also, the government’s approval was not taken before reopening the bridge in Morbi.
