IPL 2022: Ranking coaches of all the teams

The coaches certainly play a critical role in the growth of sportspersons at every stage of their career. From the youth level to the senior level, they push the players to perform to their best potential and help them in recovering from the difficult phases of their life as well.

In the Indian Premier League 2022, some of the franchises have kept the same group of coaches and support staff as the previous year, while others have appointed new ones to change their fortune in the tournament. The two new franchises this season have been perfect with their decision-making to assign this role to experienced individuals as well.

Ranking Coaches of IPL 2022

10. Punjab Kings- Anil Kumble, Damien Wright, Jonty Rhodes

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) is at the last position in the ranking of coaches in this tournament. This is primarily due to the team’s performance in the last few editions. The duty of the head coach is overseen by former legendary Indian spinner Anil Kumble since the 2020 season. His past coaching experiences include coaching the Indian cricket team and has been a mentor to the likes of MI and RCB teams during the period from 2012 to 2015.

In 2021, a former first-class cricketer from Australia Damien Wright was appointed as the bowling coach of the PBKS team. Damien has been the bowling coach of the New Zealand team, and the illustrious teams like Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL.

The former South Africa batter Jonty Rhodes has the dual role of a batting and fielding coach for the PBKS team in the 2022 season. In the past, he served as the fielding coach of MI and served as the assistant coach of Kenya’s national team as well.

9. Royal Challengers Bangalore-  Sanjay Bangar, Adam Griffith, Sridharan Sriram

One of the most popular franchises, Royal Challengers Bangalore has not yet lifted the title in the tournament’s history but has done most things right in the first few weeks of the 2022 edition. In the position of head coach is a former Indian cricketer, Sanjay Bangar. In IPL 2014, he served as head coach of Kings XI Punjab (now PBKS) and led them to their first-ever finals. Sanjay has been the batting coach as well as the head coach of the Indian cricket team in the last decade.

Since the IPL 2020, Adam Griffith is the bowling coach, while Sridharan Sriram is donning the responsibility of the batting and spin bowling coach. In the 2019 World Cup, Griffith was the assistant coach of the Australian team and has also served as the head coach of the Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL.

Sridharan Sriram was the coaching consultant for the Australian cricket team in 2015 and has also been the spin bowling coach for the Australian team in the 2018 Ashes and India Tour.

8. Rajasthan Royals- Kumar Sangakkara, Lasith Malinga, Dishant Yagnik

The inaugural IPL champions, Rajasthan Royals (RR) boasts a balanced team in the 2022 season and will hope to improve their performances as the season progresses. The former Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara is the head coach and the batting coach of the RR team this season.

Sangakkara served as the Director of Cricket for RR in 2021 but after the restructuring of the coaching roles, he has been given the responsibility of being the apex member of the squad and will help the batters to enhance their skills.

The second-highest wicket-taker in IPL, Lasith Malinga is the fast-bowling coach of RR in this edition. He served as the bowling strategy coach for Sri Lanka in their bilateral series against Australia in 2022. The fielding coach of RR is Dishant Yagnik, who has featured in 25 IPL matches for the franchise in the past.

7. Gujarat Titans- Gary Kirsten, Ashish Nehra

Gujarat Titans (GT) have put together a quality squad in their debut campaign in the tournament, and are marching up with three wins in four appearances. The much credit also goes to the coaching staff, who have a fine experience in international cricket and IPL as well.

The former Protea batter Gary Kirsten is the batting coach of the GT team in this edition. In the past, he served as the head coach of the Indian team, which won the 2011 World Cup. In the period from 2011 to 2013, Kirsten was the coach of the South Africa international team. In the IPL, he has donned the duty of batting coach and head coach of RCB in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

The head coach of the team is Ashish Nehra, with more than a decade-long international career for the Indian team. In 2018, Nehra was appointed as the bowling coach of RCB and retained his position until the 2019 edition as well.

6. Lucknow Super Giants- Andy Flower, Vijay Dahiya

The new entrants to the IPL 2022 season have made a great start to the tournament by winning three of their five league matches. They rank sixth on this list with the presence of experienced individuals in the coaching staff. The head coach of the team is former Zimbabwe cricketer and captain, Andy Flower.

Flower served as the coach of the England cricket team from 2009 to 2014. In 2020, he was the head coach for Multan Sultans in PSL, St Lucia Zouks in CPL, and assistant coach of Punjab Kings in IPL. He is the head coach of Delhi Bulls in the Abu Dhabi T10 League as well.

The assistant coach of the team is former Indian wicketkeeper Vijay Dahiya. In the past, he has served as the coach of the Delhi Ranji team from 2008 to 2014. In 2019, he served as the talent scout head of the Delhi Capitals team. Also, he was the head coach of the Uttar Pradesh state team in the 2021/22 season.

5. Kolkata Knight Riders- Brendon McCullum, Abhishek Nayar, Bharat Arun

Kolkata Knight Riders have won the title twice in 2012 and 2014, and since then, they have been a part of four playoffs. In the 2021 edition, they finished as the runners-up after losing to CSK. Since the 2020 season, the first centurion of IPL, Brendon McCullum is serving as the head coach of the KKR team. He was a part of the KKR team from 2008 to 2010, and in the 2012 winning squad as well and was the coach of the Trinbago Knight Riders team which won the 2020 CPL title.

Abhishek Nayar was a part of the Indian team in three ODIs. In 2018, he was appointed the head coach of KKR Academy, which helps in improving the skills of the players in the off-season. Since 2020, he is serving the role of an assistant coach of the KKR team.

Bharat Arun served as the bowling coach of the Indian team from 2017 to 2021. After his stint with the Indian team, he was appointed as the bowling coach of the KKR team.

4. Sunrisers Hyderabad- Tom Moody, Brian Lara, Muttiah Muralidaran, Dale Steyn

Sunrisers Hyderabad made their debut in the 2013 edition of the IPL and won the title trophy in 2016, and has reached playoffs on five occasions. The head coach of the team since the 2013 editions has been Tom Moody, who featured in eight Tests and 76 ODIs for Australia. He has the experience of guiding the Sri Lanka team to the finals in the 2007 ODI World Cup. Moody served as the head coach of the Kings XI Punjab in the IPL from 2008 to 2010.

The spin-bowling coach of the SRH team, Muttiah Muralidaran is the leading wicket-taker in international cricket with a total of 1347 wickets to his name. He joined the franchise in 2015 and is the man behind the genius of Afghanistan’s leg-spinner Rashid Khan.

The new additions to the SRH support staff in the 2022 season are Brian Lara and Dale Steyn, who are serving as the batting coach and fast bowling coach respectively. With more than 22,000 runs in international cricket, Lara will bring his proven expertise to the team. Steyn featured in a total of 95 IPL matches and will be helpful for the pace factory of SRH.

3. Chennai Super Kings- Stephen Fleming, Michael Hussey, Lakshmipathy Balaji

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team is the second most successful team (in terms of winning titles) in the history of IPL with 11 playoffs appearances and four title victories. After playing for CSK in 2008, Stephen Fleming was appointed as the head coach of the team in the subsequent edition. With his experience of leading the New Zealand team for more than 200 matches across all formats, Fleming has done well to guide the CSK team.

Michael Hussey is the batting coach of the CSK team in the 2022 season. He played 79 Tests, 185 ODIs, and 38 T20Is for Australia until 2013. He featured in 50 matches for the CSK team in the past as well. After being a batting consultant for the Australia team in the 2016 ICC World Twenty20, he was appointed as the batting coach of the franchise in 2018 and has been fairly successful.

The former Indian pace-bowler, Lakshmipathy Balaji is the bowling coach of CSK since the 2018 edition. From 2008 to 2010, he featured for CSK and was also the first bowler to take a hat-trick in IPL history. He was part of eight Tests, 30 ODIs, and five ODIs for the Indian team.

2. Mumbai Indians- Mahela Jayawardene, Shane Bond, Robin Singh

The five-time champions, Mumbai Indians (MI) have been terrific with their performances over the last 10 years. Among the three main coaches of the team, Robin Singh has been in-charge of the batting department since the 2009 edition. The former Indian cricketer featured in 136 ODIs and a single test fixture from 1989 to 2001. In the past, he has served as the fielding coach of the Indian cricket team as well.

The Kiwi fast-bowler, Shane Bond has been serving as the bowling coach of the MI team since the 2015 edition. In the past, he served as the head coach of the Sydney Thunder team in the Big Bash League. Shane featured in 18 Tests, 82 ODIs, and 20 T20Is from 2001 to 2010.

The head coach of the MI team since 2017, Mahela Jayawardene played for Sri Lanka from 1997 to 2015 in 149 Tests, 448 ODIs, and 55 T20Is. Apart from three titles for MI in 2017, 2019, and 2020, he played a key role to guide the Southern Brave team to win the inaugural edition of the Hundred in 2021.

1. Delhi Capitals- Ricky Ponting, Pravin Amre, Ajit Agarkar, Shane Watson

One of the most successful teams in the last three editions, the Delhi Capitals (DC) team has experienced individuals as their coaching staff. The head coach of the team is Ricky Ponting, who is a two-time World Cup-winning captain of the Australian team, and also donned this role in 2017 for MI. He was appointed in 2018 but found success since 2019 with the right connection with the DC players.

The team has three assistant coaches, Pravin Amre, Ajit Agarkar, and Shane Watson. The most qualified among the three is Pravin, who was the head coach of the champion Indian U19 team in the 2012 World Cup. He served as a talent scout for DC from 2013 to 2019. In 2021, he was appointed as the assistant coach and has reaped the benefits of his efforts.

Agarkar was a part of 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and four T20Is for the Indian team from 1998 to 2007. He has been a part of 42 IPL matches as well. Watson featured in 145 IPL matches until 2021 and was known to be one of the best T20 players around the world, and will help the youngsters with his experience of playing in different franchise leagues.
