It has already been five weeks of nail-biting thrillers in the shortest format with the Indian Premier League hitting new highs every day. Among the ten teams, few are sailing easily towards the playoffs while others are struggling to even perform on a consistent basis. Snatching a win from the jaws of defeat has now become a forte of the Gujarat Titans and on the other hand, Mumbai Indians are yet to open their account this season.
Week five concluded with a rather subtle win by Lucknow Super Giants over Punjab Kings where the former got an easy victory by 20 runs, helping them get to the third spot in the points table. This week saw some low-scoring games turning into nail-biting thrillers, all thanks to the last over drama that T20s have been promising over the years now.
So far this season, we have witnessed winning streaks taking a hit every second match and turning into a losing streak for some of the teams. Keeping this in mind, let us take a look at the overall ratings of all the teams at the end of the fifth week of IPL 2022:
10. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 5/10
Royal Challengers Bangalore did not get a single win under their name this week. They started their week with the worst batting performance of this season, getting all out on 68 runs in 16.1 overs against SRH. Virat Kohli’s nightmarish form continued when the prodigy got a golden duck. The wickets fell so fast that other than two middle-order batsmen, no other player even crossed the double-digit mark in the first innings.
A total like this on a high-scoring ground like Brabourne was shocking and SRH chased it down with 72 balls to spare. A nine-wicket defeat made a major impact on RCB’s net run rate. Their next clash was also a low-scoring game which they lost to RR by 29 runs. Rajasthan was asked to bat first at the MCA Stadium, Pune. A decent bowling performance limited RR to 144 in 20 overs where Riyan top scored with 56.
RCB’s poor batting continued and the team got bowled out for just 115 runs. At the end of the day, it is just a game of cricket but not for Harshal Patel, his behavior against Riyan Parag wasn’t applauded by many. Two defeats in two matches with NRR taking a hit has placed RCB at the fifth spot on the points table.
9. Kolkata Knight Riders – 6/10
The Knight Riders started the tournament on a high with their newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer getting all the praise. Currently, KKR seems to follow their earlier trends, they have now lost their last five matches just as the tournament is progressing towards playoffs. Kolkata was up against the Gujarat Titans in their first match this week.
GT had set a target of 157, thanks to captain Pandya’s forefront knock. But Andre Russell’s four wickets in the last over of the first innings stole the limelight. While chasing, Russell and Rinku Singh tried to steady the ship after an early collapse of KKR’s top order and took the game till the last over, but Alzarri Joseph bagged the most important wicket of Russell and sealed the match for his team. KKR lost this thriller by just eight runs.
Another loss came against the Delhi Capitals. Decent performances from captain Iyer, Nitish Rana, and Rinku Singh powered KKR’s score to 146. Kuldeep Yadav’s revengeful four-wicket haul disrupted the batsmen of Kolkata. DC chased it down in 19 overs, and Umesh Yadav picked up three wickets. KKR is performing well as a team but are yet to find their winning combination.
8. Punjab Kings – 6/10
Punjab Kings have Shikar Dhawan at their virtue this season and he is batting like their best buy as well. Dhawan’s unbeaten 88 off 59 against the four-time champions CSK earlier this week was one of the best innings for Punjab this season. Punjab Kings have some serious power hitters in their middle-order this season, but lack of consistency has been their major problem.
A decent bowling performance by PBKS towards the end of the innings handed them an 11-run victory against CSK. Their next game against LSG was not up to their mark considering the standards they have set in the last couple of matches. The Kings were unable to chase even a modest target of 154, Rabada’s four wickets in the first innings were the only positive for Punjab in this game.
Punjab as a side still have some chance of qualifying for the playoffs this season. It is their mindset that is making a difference for them in every match. A few wins for the side will ensure them a spot in the top four as they are currently placed at seventh on the points table with eight points against their name.
7. Mumbai Indians – 6.5/10
Mumbai Indians became the first team to get disqualified from the playoffs this season. The five-time champions MI have now lost eight games in a row. They are still at the tenth position in the points table and do not seem to be moving from there anytime soon. Other than not finding a win this season, the big names in the side are yet to deliver match-winning performances.
Mumbai lost by 36 runs against Lucknow earlier this week. A 169-run target was handed over to Mumbai but the latter only managed to score 132 runs at the end of 20 overs. Krunal Pandya emerged as a nightmare for his ex franchise as he got wickets of Rohit Sharma, Pollard, and Daniel Sams.
In the captain vs captain rivalry, Kl Rahul surely came out with flying colors and scored a ton with a strike rate of 160+. As Mumbai is out of the race for playoffs now, it’s time for the side to test their bench strength and find a better winning combination. The team now has the chance to go full as they have nothing to lose.
6. Chennai Super Kings – 7/10
While Chennai lost the only match they played earlier this week, the team has got enough rest to go in with more preparations for the next game. The clash between the PBKS and CSK was a high-scoring thriller that pumped the fans around at the Wankhede Stadium.
Chennai’s bowling was not impactful enough to restrict Punjab below 170. Liam Livingstone and Bhanuka’s little cameos at the death surely made the difference. Chennai Super Kings have been missing their star bowler Deepak Chahar, Mukesh Choudhary bowled good outswingers in the previous games, but against Punjab, he went wicketless.
In this season, Ambati Rayudu seems to be consistent and quick at the same time. He smashed 78 off 39 balls with a strike rate of 200, taking his side closer to the finishing line. Unlike other times, MS Dhoni was unable to finish it off this time as he got out on the 3rd ball of the last over. CSK is placed at the ninth position with only two wins so far.
5. Delhi Capitals – 8/10
Delhi Capitals, infamous for their reaction on the field to the no-ball controversy, are trying to make a statement with four wins out of the eight matches they have played. Delhi defeated Kolkata by four wickets while chasing 147 runs at the Wankhede stadium. DC is currently placed in the sixth position in the points table.
Shreyas Iyer scored 42 runs against his ex franchise, whereas Kuldeep also performed well against his ex franchise. In his spell of three overs, the spinner bagged four wickets, giving away just 14 runs at an economy of 4.7. Kuldeep helped restrict the Knights to 146 in 20 overs. While chasing, young Prithvi Shaw got a golden duck.
His opening partner, David Warner managed to sail the innings and scored 42 off 26 deliveries. Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel made valuable contributions before Rovman Powell sealed the deal with his quick-fire 33. Delhi Capitals won the match by four wickets.
4. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 8.5/10
Sunrisers have impressed everyone this season with their will to fight as a team. Umran Malik has been sensational this season, he picked up a 5 wicket haul in the last match against Gujarat Titans. His fame has skyrocketed after he has clocked 150kmph consistently in all the matches that he has played.
SRH destroyed RCB’s batting lineup and once again showed why they are known as one of the best bowling sides in the IPL. They bowled out RCB for 68 runs in 16.1 overs at Brabourne Staidum, Mumbai. Marco Jansen and T. Natarajan scalped three wickets each while all the others who bowled picked up at least one wicket each.
In the next match at the Wankhede stadium, SRH scored 195 runs while batting first. Abhishek Sharma as an opener is performing consistently well in the last few matches. Gujarat Titans chased it down in the last over, the SRH management was not at all happy with Marco Jansen’s last over approach. This five-wicket defeat has put SRH at the fourth position in the points table.
3. Lucknow Super Giants – 9/10
Captain KL Rahul has scored two centuries this season and is performing well for his new franchise Lucknow Super Giants. This new entrant is emerging as one of the toughest teams to beat this season. In their first match of this week, LSG defeated Mumbai by a good margin of 36 runs. KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 103 runs from 62 balls.
Another great display of bowling by LSG in their next match against Punjab saw them winning the game comfortably by 20 runs. De Kock and Rahul have performed consistently for LSG at the top of the order, the bowling department has been exceptionally well in the last few matches.
Lucknow is currently placed at the third position in the points table with a net run rate of +0.408 and 12 points. They are strong contenders for the playoffs. Whenever LSG’s top order has failed, the middle order has chipped in with some valuable contributions to get the team out of the batting blues.
2. Rajasthan Royals – 9.5/10
Rajasthan Royals have emerged as a better side this season. Sanju Samson’s captaincy is commendable when it comes to making the right call in the death overs. Rajasthan has won six out of the eight games they have played so far including their win over RCB this week.
With youngster Riyan Parag battling it out in the middle, RR managed to put up a total of 144 in 20 overs. Riyan alone scored 56 to help his side with a decent total. Apart from his dependable batting, Riyan is a top-class fielder as well. He took four catches in the last game against RCB.
Rajasthan won the match by 29 runs where Kuldeep Sen topped the wicket list with four wickets in 21 balls he bowled. With this win, RR sits at the second position in the points table. Rajasthan can possibly qualify for the playoffs if they keep up their winning momentum in the upcoming matches.
1. Gujarat Titans – 9.5/10
Gujarat Titans have been the most consistent team in this edition of the IPL, they have got everything right in almost all their matches. Their first tournament as a team has brought so much thrill to IPL and is continuing to charm their fans around. GT has lost only one game since the commencement of IPL 2022. With 16 points in nine games, they are currently the table toppers.
Hardik Pandya has performed brilliantly as a captain, his all round display has been the talk of the town. Other than him, Rahul Tewatia has taken his team over the line twice this season. His last over heroics has astonished his teammates and has left the fans in awe of his batting. GT is producing power hitters like Rashid Khan, with his lethal skills of turning the game with the ball, now he is up with the bat as well.
Wridhiman Saha scored a quickfire 68 runs from 38 balls against his ex franchise SRH. Tewatia and Khan smashed four sixes in the last over thriller against SRH and sealed another victory for Gujarat. In every match, a new hero has turned up for Gujarat Titans which shows the kind of depth they have in their playing XI. Gujarat Titans have surely emerged as a nightmare for all the other franchises this season.
