Now married women will keep Vat Savitri fast on 4th June, on the day of Jyestha Purnima. The fast of Vat Savitri is mainly observed in many regions including Maharashtra, Gujarat and South India on the date of Jyestha Purnima.

Why it is kept twice with an interval of 15 days?

Vat Savitri fast is observed on Jyeshtha Amavasya and Jyeshtha Purnima. But what is the reason behind this that the same fast is observed twice in the same month with an interval of 15 days. While the worship, rituals, story and importance etc. are same in both the festivals. Let us know about it.

According to Skanda Purana and Bhavishya Purana, Vat Savitri’s fast is observed on the full moon day of Shukla Paksha of Jyestha month. But according to Nirchanamrutadi, it has been told about the law of observing this fast on the new moon day of Krishna Paksha of Jyestha month. Whereas in India, people do it on both Amavasya and Purnima dates. While the only difference between the two is the dates and all other methods are the same.

This is the main reason

According to the story of Vat Savitri Vrat, Savitri had sought three boons from Yamraj to save the life of her husband Satyavan. In the last and third boon, Savitri asked Yamraj for the boon of being the mother of 100 sons. Then finally Yamraj had to return Satyavan’s life. It is said that the day Yamraj brought back Satyavan’s life was the day of Jyestha Amavasya. That’s why women observe Vat Savitri fast on Jyestha Amavasya.
