It is considered most auspicious to worship Mahashivratri in the midnight of Nishita Kaal. 18 February 2023 i.e. Sunday midnight from 12:15 to 01:06 is the auspicious time for worship.

The meeting of Shiva Shakti

There are many mythological stories hidden behind why Mahashivratri is celebrated.  According to mythology, on the day of Maha Shivratri  Shiva and Shakti had met. Devotees of Mahadev stay awake for the whole night of Mahashivratri to worship their deity. Shiva devotees celebrate the marriage of Lord Shiva on this day.  It is believed that Shakti was married to Lord Shiva on the day of Mahashivaratri.

Mahadev appeared for the first time

Some mythological stories also say that Lord Shiva appeared for the first time on the day of Mahashivratri. Shiva’s manifestation was in the form of Jyotirlinga i.e. Shivalinga of fire. Such a Shivling which had neither beginning nor end. It is believed that in order to locate the Shivling, Brahmaji was trying to see the topmost part of the Shivling in the form of a swan, but he could not succeed. He could not even reach the topmost part of the Shivling. On the other hand Lord Vishnu in the form of Varah was also looking for the support of Shivling but he also could not find the support.

12 Jyotirlinga

It is believed that Shivling appeared at 64 different places on the day of Mahashivratri itself. Out of them, we only know the name of 12 places. We know them by the name of 12 Jyotirlingas, so on the day of Mahashivratri, people light a lamp in the Mahakaleshwar temple of Ujjain.

On the day of Mahashivratri, bathe Lord Shiva’s idol or Shivling with Panchamrit, as well as worship with ‘Om Namah Shivayah’ mantra. After this, Lord Shiva should be worshiped in the four hours of the night and the fast should be broken the next morning by donating to Brahmins.
