Commonwealth Games 2022: Commonwealth Games. Star boxer Amit Panghal, the biggest hope of gold medal for India, started his journey with victory. In the 51 kg category, Amit Panghal confirmed his place in the quarterfinals. World Championships silver medalist Panghal defeated Vanuatu’s Namri Beri by unanimous decision.
Panghal maintains dominance
Berry had no answer to Panghal’s flurry of punches in the first two rounds. After taking hold of the match, Panghal took a defensive approach in the third round, so that he could save his energy for the tough challenges ahead.
Medal hopes rise
Panghal is one win away from getting his second Commonwealth Games medal. He had won a silver medal in the last season (Gold Coast in 2018). He will face 20-year-old Lennon Mulligan of Scotland in the quarter-finals. Panghal said after his victory, “It was like a good exercise but it was easy. My opponent was good but I didn’t have any trouble against him.”
Last season’s bronze medalist, Hussamuddin also put up an impressive performance with the use of his quick-witted punch. This 28-year-old boxer of India made brilliant counter-attacks. He must beat Namibia’s Tryagan Morning Ndevelo in the last eight to be sure of a medal.
