Nitin Gadkari: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday told Rajya Sabha members that he is the ‘father of toll tax’ on expressways in the country, as he did in 1990. The first such road was constructed in Maharashtra during his tenure as Minister of State in the late 1980s. Gadkari made the remarks while replying to supplementary questions during Question Hour in Rajya Sabha. Members in the House had expressed concern over setting up of toll plazas on expressways within the city limits, due to which the local population has to pay tolls even if they are within the city.

Gadkari said that "Fortunately or unfortunately, I am the father of this toll, because for the first time in the country, I started the toll system and the first BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) project was Thane in Maharashtra."  He informed that under Gadkari’s tenure as PWD Minister in the Government of Maharashtra between 1995 and 1999, the first of its kind Mumbai-Pune Expressway project was started.

New system will start, no tax will be charged
The minister said that with the new system that is going to start, we will see that the area of ​​the city will end and no fee will be charged from the people. will go. He said that often the people of the city use only 10 km of the expressway road and are asked to pay toll for 75 km.
