Shahbaz Sharif: The journey from the CM of Punjab province to the PM of Pakistan was decided like this

Shahbaz Sharif has become the new Prime Minister of Pakistan. Voting was held in Parliament on Monday for the majority test in which he got 174 votes.   • Born into a Punjabi-speaking Kashmiri family in Lahore in September 1951, Shahbaz entered politics in the mid-1980s with his elder brother Nawaz.
  • He was first a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly in 1988. Nawaz became the Chief Minister of Punjab when he was elected. Sharif was sacked.
  • Shahbaz then lived with his family in exile in Saudi Arabia for eight years and returned to his homeland in 2007.
  • He was second in 2008 and in 2013. Became the Chief Minister of Punjab for the third time.
  • After Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was disqualified from office in 2017 in the Panama Papers case, the PML-N appointed Shahbaz as party president.
  • As of 2018. after the elections Shahbaz became the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.
  • In September 2020, Shahbaz was appointed to the anti-corruption body– He was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau on charges of money laundering and disproportionate income. This allegation Imran Khan‘s government imposed on him.
  • Shahbaz denied the charges and remained in jail for several months. He later got bail.
  • He is currently facing a 14 billion Pakistani Rupee money laundering case brought against him by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) of Pakistan in the UK. He is also out on bail in this case.

Shahbaz’s family

  • Shehbaz did five marriages. At present he has two wives – Nusrat and Tehmina Durrani – While he did three other – Aliya Hani, Nilofar Khoja and divorced Kulsoom. He has two sons and three daughters from Nusrat and a daughter from Aaliya.
  • Shehbaz’s elder son Hamza Shahbaz is the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly. Hamza is also contesting for the chief minister’s post against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf coalition candidate Pervez Elahi.
  • His younger son Suleman Shahbaz looks after the family business. He is absconding in money laundering and disproportionate income case and is in UK for the last few years.

The Sharif family has its roots in Anantnag in Kashmir
Shahbaz’s father, Muhammad Sharif, was an industrialist who had come from Anantnag in Kashmir for business and moved to Punjab in the early 20th century. Jatti had settled in Umra village in Amritsar district. His mother’s family came from Pulwama.

After Partition, Shahbaz’s family moved from Amritsar to Lahore where they named their house ‘Jatti Umra’ (located in Raiwind on the outskirts of Lahore). kept. He graduated from Government College University, Lahore.

Nawaz wanted Maryam to be the PM
Although it is said that Nawaz Sharif wants his daughter Maryam to become the Prime Minister, he has been convicted in the Avenfield corruption case. So Nawaz had no option but to nominate Shahbaz from his party for the top executive post.

When three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif was sacked by the apex court in 2017, he preferred party leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi over his younger brother Shahbaz for the remaining 10-month term as prime minister.

Shahbaz has good relations with the army
According to experts, Shahbaz has cordial relations with the mighty army. The military has ruled the country for more than half of Pakistan’s 75-year history, and the military still maintains considerable influence in matters of security and foreign policy.
