Commonwealth Games 2022 India Lawn Bowls: Mahendra Singh Dhoni gave Ranchi worldwide recognition but Lovely of the same city aspires to earn a name in the country. Lovely is a member of the team that won India’s first medal in lawn bowls at the Commonwealth Games. Lovely Choubey, Roopa Rani Tirkey, Pinky and Nayanmoni Saikia couldn’t believe they created history after beating New Zealand in the Women’s Force semi-final.
38 year old Lovely is a constable in Jharkhand Police while Roopa is also from Ranchi and working in sports department. Pinky is a sports teacher at DPS RK Puram in Delhi while Nayanmoni hails from a farming family in Assam and is working in the state forest department.
Lovely was a 100 meter sprinter while Nayanmoni was a weightlifter. Both had to come to the lawn bowls due to injury. Lovely said that lawn bowls require a green field and a ball, but the ball is not made in India but is imported from Australia and England. He expressed hope that things will change after his medal.
Dhoni makes an occasional visit to the field during practice in Ranchi and Lovely says he knows a lot about lawn bowls. He said, ‘‘Dhoni sir knows our coach in Ranchi and has also come on the field twice. When he goes to the temple of Devi Mata, he also comes to our ground. He said that when he goes to Australia he plays lawn bowls.’’
