Veteran pacer Tim Southee  registered a hat-trick during the second T20I between New Zealand and India at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui and in the process became only the second bowler to register two T20I hat-tricks to his name.

Southee’s crucial hat-trick also ensured that India did not post a first innings total in excess of 200 despite a quickfire century from the top-ranked batter Suryakumar Yadav who is only growing from strength-to-strength in this format.

Tim Southee registers yet another hat-trick to his name in the shortest format

Tim Southee achieved this unique feat in the final over of the first innings where he picked up the wickets of stand-in captain Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda, and, Washington Sundar off successive deliveries.

Apart from making a tremendous impact in the wickets column, Southee also ensured that he bowled a tight last over conceding just five runs. He finished with figures of 3/34 from his quota of four overs at an economy rate of 8.5.

Tim Southee has thus become the second bowler to register two hat-tricks in the shortest format after Sri Lanka pace icon Lasith Malinga. The tall pacer had registered his first T20I hat-trick way back in December 2010 against Pakistan when he dismissed the likes of Younis Khan, Mohammad Hafeez, and, Umar Akmal to achieve the feat.

Meanwhile, this hat-trick has also ensured that Tim Southee is now the highest wicket-taker in T20Is. He now has 130 scalps to his tally. The second spot on this list is occupied by veteran Bangladesh all-rounder and T20I captain Shakib Al Hasan who has 128 wickets to his name.

India finished their innings at 191/6 courtesy of a thunderous knock of an unbeaten 111 runs off 51 deliveries by Suryakumar Yadav. This also happened to be Yadav’s second T20I ton and coincidentally, both of them have come in 2022.
