Sri Lanka Economic Crisis: In the midst of a severe economic crisis, Sri Lanka’s new PM Ranil Wickremesinghe has promised that he will do his best to lift the country’s troubled economy. He said, “I have accepted the challenge to lift the economy and I have to meet it.” Regarding India-Sri Lanka relations, PM said, "It will get much better." Regarding the people protesting on the streets of the country, the PM said, “They should stay, we want them to stop, if they want to talk, we are ready.”
Four times the country’s PM
Wickremesinghe, who was the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka four times, was removed from the post of Prime Minister by the then President Maithripala Sirisena in October 2018. However, he was reinstated by Sirisena only two months later.
The party has only one seat in Parliament
Interestingly, those party UNP is the oldest party in the country but could not win a single seat in the 2020 parliamentary elections. Even Wickremesinghe lost the election from Colombo, a stronghold of the UNP. Later he could reach the Parliament through the national list allotted to the UNP on the basis of Gross National Votes.
